MID-CENTURY RENOVATION

Our renovation of this 1960s home embraced a thoughtful design approach, aimed at restoring its original mid-century modern character while tailoring it to reflect the lifestyle of its current owners. Faced with the decision to renovate or move in search of their forever home, the clients were presented with a variety of design solutions, each aligned with their hopes and aspirations. Ultimately, the final design not only saved them from moving but also reinvigorated their living experience by uniting the kitchen, dining, living, and laundry areas—reclaiming the home’s original sophistication, which had been lost through previous renovations.

The kitchen underwent a complete reorganization, reshaping circulation and flow through the space. A sleek new front-entry closet unit was introduced to enhance space efficiency and provide a natural division between areas. Custom finishes and cabinetry paid homage to the existing exposed teak-clad beam, contrasted beautifully by soft-ivory, high-gloss surfaces and luxurious countertops. Disguised, upgraded appliances contributed to the seamless, minimalist aesthetic, while a waterfall island became the centerpiece of the redesigned kitchen, centralizing functions.

A custom millwork room divider, bridging the dining room to the basement stairs, was meticulously crafted based on research into mid-century modern design and detailing. It served a dual purpose—acting as both a stylish guardrail and an elegant partition that preserved light and openness. To enhance the home’s functionality, access to the back mudroom and laundry area was shifted toward the exterior wall, improving privacy and sightlines. The millwork from the kitchen was extended into this area, creating a sense of continuity throughout. Built-in storage for coats, boots, and seasonal sports equipment was designed with a focus on both efficiency and elegance.

The original brick fireplace was preserved, while the outdated brick wall display unit was replaced with a custom-built bookcase and entertainment center. This new unit not only concealed audio-visual equipment for a clean, wireless look but also incorporated indirect uplighting, casting a soft, ambient glow throughout the space.

The success of this project stemmed from a deep understanding of our clients’ desire to stay in their home while adapting it to their evolving needs. By listening to the house’s original form and reinterpreting it for modern family function, we transformed this house into a rejuvenated home that embodies both timeless design and personalized function.
